"Children First"
Alexander
County's "Children First" motto summarizes the attitude
that teachers, staff, supervisors, and administrators have concerning
the education of its youth. All county and individual school
goals are set to enable children to reach their fullest potential.
Keeping "Children First" in the forefront motivates
school personnel to serve the needs of all children in
Alexander County.
The
system's mission statement reads: "Alexander County schools
are committed to excellence in teaching and to the belief that
all children can learn. Our goal is to challenge each child with
high expectations to learn, to achieve, and to fulfill his or her
potential." Taking this statement, each school develops
its school goals, objectives, and strategies for meeting the
mission statement.
Alexander
County School System provides a wide range of services for
its students. Among the many specialists who work with students are
psychologists, speech and physical therapists, special education
teachers, librarians, and dance, art, drama, foreign language,
English as a second language, and physical education teachers.
Head Start gives preschoolers a good foundation. The Smart
Start Governor's Program funded by the state is a training resource
for day care, pre-school programs and Head Start. Guidance counselors
serve all 10 schools. Instruction in remedial reading is available
through Title 1 reading program, after-school tutoring, reading
partners and other offerings.
With
rising test scores, a declining drop-out rate, progressive
leadership, dedicated teachers, excellent facilities, a low student
violence rate, a high number of North Carolina Teaching Fellows,
and other positive trends, Alexander County schools are truly putting "Children
First".
